Leadership Theory and Research

Abstract

After the contingency theory of leadership, theorists began to develop alternative approaches to understanding leadership. The new approaches to leadership are discussed in this chapter. These new approaches to leadership are implicit leadership theories, leader–member exchange, servant, charismatic, transactional, transformational, distributed, authentic and entrepreneurial leadership. Case studies are available to assess the reader’s understanding of the relevant approaches in this chapter. This chapter argues that leadership is an underdeveloped phenomenon, for which no unified theory currently exists. The strengths and weaknesses of these approaches are listed and discussed.
