Abstract
Parasites of the genus Leishmania are classified by genetic, biological, and immunological criteria. Different species trigger diverse clinical manifestations that are the result of interactions with the host’s immune response. The complexity of this response and the following pathogenesis of leishmaniases is a product of genetic and cellular factors that have been implicated in mediating resistance and susceptibility to infection. In this chapter, we summarize the principal aspects of the immunology and immunopathology of leishmaniases and how each genetic and cellular component interacts with the immune system of the host to establish a successful infection.
