Abstract

Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) is a surgical procedure that establishes a passage between the lacrimal sac and upper portion of the lacrimal duct with the nasal cavity. The most frequent indication to perform DCR is an idiopathic nasolacrimal obstruction caused by scarring of a previously patent duct. It can also be performed for partial obstruction, recurrent acute dacryocystitis, for retained foreign body in the lacrimal duct such as a piece of silicone tubing or retained punctal plugs, and in children with congenital lacrimal obstruction refractory to probing and other less invasive procedures. More rarely it needs to be done to obtain a biopsy or remove a mass in the lacrimal sac.
