Abstract

Obesity has become endemic, with rates of obese and morbidly obese adults increasing yearly. General, bariatric and hernia surgeons are facing more complex scenarios, with an arising proportion of patients with ventral hernias presenting with morbid obesity. Surgical approach and timing of hernia repair in this complex population is a common surgical dilemma, which still creates controversies among specialists and lacks sufficient data to recommend specific and uncontestable guidelines. This chapter’s purpose is to deliver guidance on patient counseling, patient selection, and a rational and evidence-based use of the hernia surgery armamentarium in order to provide a safe and durable ventral hernia repair.
