Clinical Algorithms in General Surgery

Abstract

The presentation of a neck mass involves a broad differential diagnosis. An understanding of neck anatomy and the predilection for lesions toward certain areas, based on patient demographics, is necessary for proper assessment. A thorough understanding of diagnostic imaging modalities will facilitate a clinician’s workup. Head and neck malignancy must always be considered as a potential underlying etiology, particularly should the lesion grow despite therapeutic intervention or there be concerning signs/symptoms, as detailed in this chapter.
