Abstract
Syringomyelia is characterized by fluid filled cysts forming within the spinal cord. Compression of spinothalamic tracts and anterior horn cells can lead to loss of temperature sensation, pain and muscle weakness often in the upper limbs. Diagnosis by magnetic resonance imaging confirms the conditions extent and identifies the cause. Management is to correct the cause thus reducing the expansion of the cysts.
