Zusammenfassung
Die folgende Diskussion dreht sich um die These, dass es in einer zunehmend globalisierten Welt — mehr dazu weiter unten — einen wachsenden Druck in Richtung einer Verbindung von religiösen und staatlichen Belangen gibt. Denn unter den gegenwärtigen globalen Gegebenheiten sind Nationalstaaten sowie andere „kleinere“ und „größere“ soziokulturelle Formationen gezwungen, sich stärker über die „tieferen“ Aspekte modernen Lebens bewusst zu werden. Zugleich wird das Bewusstsein — oder gar die „Erfindung“ — von Wurzeln, Traditionen, einem kulturellen Erbe usw. fast immer die starke Berücksichtigung religiös-kultureller Ressourcen bei der Bestimmung von Identitäten mit sich bringen (Robertson 1989: 10; 1992). Diese zumindest auf Seiten der religiösen, politischen und kulturellen Eliten erfolgende Beschäftigung mit den diffusen Themen der Identitätsformation kann schließlich in den Kontext einer inklusiveren und vielleicht auch kontroversen These eingerückt werden, die dem weit verbreiteten, jedoch keineswegs von allen geteilten Argument zuwiderläuft, dass sich die Welt fast vollständig in einer irreversiblen Ära der Säkularisierung befinde (Asad 1999; Beckford 1989: 107–128).
