Abstract

Through its recently published youth survey Jordan has become the second Arab country that has chosen youth as a subject of comprehensive research. The article traces the development of Jordanian youth research since its beginnings in the second half of the 1990s with regard to its agents, methods and results in the context of the political, economic and social changes that have affected the country and the region. Young Jordanians’ participation in the education system, the labour market, family and public life is taken as an example in order to demonstrate the tension between traditional patriarchal ways of thinking and acting as they are still prevalent even among youths themselves and the goals of development organizations and political decision makers. This necessitates a search for new ways of dialogue and action for and with youths in order to initiate much needed change.
