Zusammenfassung
In welchem Ausmaß hat das physikalische Prinzip der Dissipation diejenigen Autoren des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts, die sich mit philosophischen und kulturellen Fragen beschäftigten, nachweislich beeinflußt? Sieht man von Kelvins eigener Anwendung seines Prinzips auf die Geschichte der Geologie ab, dann läßt sich bis zur Jahrhundertwende bloß eine erstaunlich geringe Wirkung auf das europäische Gedankengut feststellen. Erst um 1900 herum findet man immer mehr Hinweise auf den zweiten Hauptsatz der Thermodynamik sowie Versuche, ihn mit generellen Entwicklungslinien der Geschichte in Verbindung zu bringen. Während im neunzehnten Jahrhundert erschienene populärwissenschaftliche Darstellungen der Physik, wie z. B. Tyndalls Heat as a Mode of Motion (1863), auf die eigentlichen Konsequenzen des zweiten Hauptsatzes kaum Bezug nehmen, haben die in neuerer Zeit veröffentlichten Abhandlungen von Sir James Jeans (1929, 193 3) und Sir Arthur Eddington (1928) den „Wärmetod“ zu einem integralen Bestandteil des kosmologischen Wissens eines gebildeten Laien der Gegenwart gemacht. Sowohl Theologen als auch Philosophen sahen sich genötigt, die Thermodynamik in ihre Überlegungen miteinzubeziehen (Hiebert 1966, 1967).
„Man hört häufig sagen, in der Welt sei Alles Kreislauf Während an Einem Orte und zu Einer Zeit Veränderungen in Einem Sinne stattfinden, gehen an anderen Orten und zu anderen Zeiten auch Veränderungen im entgegengesetzten Sinne vor sich, so daß dieselben Zustände immer wiederkehren, und im Grossen und Ganzen der Zustand der Welt unverändert bleibe. Die Welt könne daher ewig in gleicher Weise fortbestehen ...
Der zweite Hauptsatz der mechanischen Wärmetheorie widerspricht dieser Ansicht auf das Bestimmteste ... Man muß also schliessen, dass bei allen Naturerscheinungen der Gesammtwerth der Entropie immer nur zunehmen und nie abnehmen kann ... Die Entropie der Welt strebt einem Maximum zu.
Je mehr die Welt sich diesem Grenzzustande, wo die Entropie ein Maximum ist, nähert, desto mehr nehmen die Veranlassungen zu weiteren Veränderungen ab, und wenn dieser Zustand endlich ganz erreicht wäre, so würden auch keine weiteren Veränderungen mehr vorkommen, und die Welt würde sich in einem todten Beharrungszustande befinden. “ (Clausius 1867: 15–17)
