Summary

The members of the Priority Research Programme ‘Flow Simulation on Supercomputers’ applied for a massively parallel system in June 1990. They proposed and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) decided to purchase a transputer-based parallel system developed and produced by Parsystec GmbH (Aachen). The computing center of Aachen University of Technology (RWTH Aachen) operates a system with 256 computing nodes since March 1991. The members of the research programme from outside Aachen can access the system via the German Science Network (Wissenschaftsnetz WIN).

Besides a short overview about characteristics of the parallel system and its network integration at the computing center of RWTH Aachen, some experiences in operation and a general improvement in operation and usage of this system will be reported in more detail.
