Zusammenfassung
Der Begriff „Mobile Payment“ oder „M-Payment“ bezeichnet Zahlungsverfahren, die auf das Mobiltelefon (mobile phone) zurückgreifen. Anwendungen sind im Electronic Commerce (E-Commerce) und Mobile Commerce (M-Commerce) ebenso wie offline an der Kasse oder an Automaten möglich. Zentrales Element beim M-Payment ist, dass der Kunde den Zahlungsvorgang per Handy autorisiert und gegebenenfalls, z. B. im M-Commerce, auch anstößt. Dadurch bietet sich Mobilfunkbetreibern und indirekt auch Handyherstellern die Möglichkeit, in den Markt für Zahlungsdienstleistungen einzusteigen und etablierten Finanzdienstleistern Konkurrenz zu machen. Entsprechend ist das gerade entstehende Feld des M-Payment gekennzeichnet durch zahlreiche Aktivitäten der Netzbetreiber, ebenso aber der Banken und Kreditkartenunternehmen. Es besteht eine Vielfalt von Initiativen und Allianzen, die zum Teil sehr unterschiedliche technische Lösungen verfolgen. Das Umsatzpotenzial des europäischen M-Payment-Marktes im Jahre 2005 wird von Durlacher (2000, S. 106) auf fast 1,5 Milliarden € geschätzt. Allein die Größenordnung macht verständlich, warum derzeit ein Wettrennen zum M-Payment stattfindet.
