Grundlegendes Ziel von Lean Management ist die Optimierung der gesamten Wertschöpfungskette. Dabei bedient sich Lean Management nacheinander gewachsener — oder auch nacheinander importierter — technologischer, aufbau- und ablauforganisatorischer Steuerungselemente. Die wesentlichen sind modulares Out-Sourcing, Just-in-Time-Logistik, Simultaneous Engeneering, Contineous Improvement Process und Total Quality Management.
