Zusammenfassung
Im internationalen Vergleich ist die gegenwärtige ökonomische und soziale Situation in den USA durch viele Ausnahmen gekennzeichnet. Die ökonomische Leistungsfähigkeit wird auch weiterhin als gut bezeichnet. Der 1991 begonnene Wachstumszyklus hält an. Die Arbeitslosenrate ist niedriger und die Zahl neuer Stellen höher als in Deutschland und den meisten OECD-Ländern. Gleichzeitig stagnieren weiterhin die Realeinkommen und die ungleiche Einkommensentwicklung hat zugenommen (OECD 1996b: 1, 10). Die USA porträtieren sich weiterhin als das reichste Land, haben aber gleichzeitig einen der höchsten Anteile an Armutsbevölkerung und, verglichen mit zehn anderen Industrieländern, die höchste Ungleichheit bei der Einkommensverteilung. Das Niveau der Sozialausgaben für Arme ist weiterhin niedrig (Lipset 1996: 75–76). Erneut scheint sich das Konzept vom „American Exceptionalism” als Erklärungsansatz zu bestätigen.
