Zusammenfassung

Die drei Schaffensstationen Raabes bieten diese Einteilung an: Berlin und Wolfenbüttel (1854–1862), Stuttgart (1862 bis 1870), Braunschweig (1870–1902). Raabe selbst hat mehrfach auf solche Weise sein Gesamtwerk in „drei Haufen“ gegliedert (vgl. Br. F., S. 257). Grob gesehen entspricht diese schematische Einteilung bis zu einem gewissen Grade der geistigen Entwicklung Raabes. Das haben Karl Hoppe (in: Sammlung 1957, S. 142) und Gerhart Mayer (1960) dargestellt. Leichte Verschiebungen sind dabei von untergeordneter Bedeutung (so gliedert Mayer 1854—1863, 1864–1874, 1875–1902). Andere Einteilungsversuche haben keine Aussicht, sich durchzusetzen (wie etwa Pongs’ Zweiteilung der Braunschweiger Zeit in 1870–1877 und 1877–1902). Der bewährten Dreiteilung bedient sich daher auch die nachstehende Übersicht.
