Zum ersten Mal im modernen Sinne des Wortes verwendet Daniel Wilson 1853 das Adjektiv ‘ethnic’ in seinem The archaeology and prehistoric annals of Scotland, so das Oxford English Dictionary (2003). Während ‘ethnic’ seit dem 15. Jahrhundert im Sinne von ‘heidnisch’ verwendet wurde, bezeichnet es ab dem 19. Jahrhundert auch sprachliche oder kulturelle Gruppen.1 Die Verwendung des Wortes ethnisch zur Beschreibung von Bevölkerungsgruppen in Europa ist also weder neu noch originell. Europäerinnen und Europäer haben sich daran gewöhnt, sich selbst und andere als Mitglieder vieler verschiedener ethnischer Gruppen zu verstehen.
