Samuel James Eldersveld kam am 29. März 1917 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, als Sohn eines Pfarrers in einer Großfamilie zur Welt. Nachdem er seinen B.A. am Calvin College im Jahr 1938 abgeschlossen hatte, erwarb er ein Jahr später den M.A. an der University of Michigan. Durch den Einfluss des ersten Leiters des Instituts, Professor Jesse Reeves, wurde er von seinem ursprünglichen Vorhaben abgebracht, Lehrer an einem College zu werden (Knoll 2000: 7). Ausgestattet mit einem Stipendium und einer wissenschaftlichen Assistentenstelle blieb Eldersveld an der Universität in Michigan, um zu promovieren. Doch seine wissenschaftliche Karriere wurde durch den Zweiten Weltkrieg unterbrochen, in dem er von 1942 bis 1946 bei der US Navy diente und im Pazifikkrieg eingesetzt war.
