Contextual Design of a Computer-Supported Film Set: A Case Study

Abstract

In this paper we present the construction of a highly-interactive computer-supported film set (CSFS) by using elements of contextual design and UML models. Specific aspects of usability, domain functionality, cost, realtime and robustness requirements for systems which are used on the set for supporting the production of feature films and commercials are discussed. Contextual design can lead to superior usability and more complete product functionality. The CSFS supports multiple contexts of use. This is highlighted by an example: The software model for coupling the CSFS main unit, the PSU (Pre-Screen Unit), to wireless low-power tablet PCs (Director’s Pad).
