Während sich in der Mitte des vorigen Jahrhunderts die hörverbessernden chirurgischen Verfahren zügig entwickelt haben, kamen die chirurgischen Eingriffe am Gleichgewichtssystem erst mit einer etwa 10-jährigen Pause Anfang der 60er-Jahre im größeren Umfang in den weltweiten klinischen Alltagseinsatz [38]. Von Pioniertaten und einzelnen Zentren abgesehen (z. B. Eröffnung des Endolymphsacks durch George Portmann 1926 [40]), hat durch die Verfeinerung der mikrochirugischen Techniken [19] und des dazu erforderlichen Instrumentariums bzw. intraoperativer Monitoringtechniken [5, 38], durch die verbesserte Bildgebung (CT, MRT, MR-Angiografie, [2, 15]) und die wissenschaftliche Aufdeckung verschiedener pathophysiologischer Grundlagen von Gleichgewichtsstörungen (isolierte Otolithenfunktionsstörungen, Erkrankungen einzelner Anteile des 8. Hirnnerven [16, 17, 40, 47]) erst relativ spät eine, dann vergleichsweise stürmische Entwicklung eingesetzt, deren Ende heute noch nicht abzusehen ist [10, 25].
