Abstract

In 1975, when Schawlow was President of the Optical Society of America, he proposed a contest for the best “Turvy Topsy.” A “Turvy Topsy” is, of course, the inverse of a Topsy Turvy, whereas a Topsy Turvy is a picture which looks like some recognizable object when right side up or upside down. A “Turvy Topsy”, therefore, must show an object which is always obviously upside down.
