Die (rezidivierende) Polychondritis ist eine seltene, chronisch entzündliche Erkrankung aus dem rheumatischen Formenkreis, die meist in Schüben die Knorpel der Ohren, der Nase und des Trachealsystems befällt. Die Erkrankung wurde erstmals 1923 beschrieben, bis heute sind weltweit aber nur wenige hundert Krankheitsfälle bekannt. Extrakartilaginäre Manifestationen können ebenfalls auftreten. Die Bandbreite des Schweregrades der Erkrankung ist sehr variabel, sie reicht von kurzfristigen, gut beherrschbaren Ohrknorpelentzündungen bis zu lebensbedrohlichen Atemwegsobstruktionen durch kollabierenden Trachealknorpel.
