Abstract

The QSO HS 1700+6416 (z = 2.72) has been observed spectroscopically with HST in the range 1160 to 3280 Å at a resolution of. λ/Δλ = 1300 to 2200. We report the discovery of ~40 new quasar absorption lines from EUV rest wavelengths in 16 redshift systems. In particular, lines from the ions HeI, OIII-OV, NIII, NIV, NeIII-NeVII, SIII-SV have been detected. All 16 metal line systems (MLS) show highly ionized species (0V, OIV, NIV,...). From the number of systems per redshift interval the characteristic radii of the highly ionized gas clouds is estimated as R > 150 h100 −1 kpc. The wide coverage of ionization stages will permit reliable abundance studies as well as observational constraints for the ionizing radiation field. We find in particular an oxygen overabundance relative to carbon [0/C] = 0.5...0.9 similar to that observed in Halo stars. Arguments in favour and against ionization by a metagalactic radiation field due to QSOs are presented.
