Zur Erklärung des Pathomechanismus des Glaukoms werden meist zwei getrennte Hypothesen herangezogen: die mechanische und die vaskuläre. Diese beiden Mechanismen wirken aber nicht unabhängig und können sogar synergetisch zur Entwicklung des Glaukoms beitragen. Um den Einfluss der biomechanischen Faktoren im Rahmen der Glaukomerkrankung besser verstehen zu können, müssen auch deren Wechselwirkungen mit den zellulären Reaktionen betrachtet werden.
