Abstract
ITIL recommends implementing Service Portfolio Management as a way to actively manage IT investments, with transparency in its operations and spending. Selecting which and when projects should be executed is an important but complex task. It is all the more complex if one includes operational costs, which represent a significant component of the IT budget. We investigate techniques to provide decision support in selecting IT investments. We provide a model to link IT investment selection to business value and a method to generate valid portfolios and to guide an IT executive the ‘best’ portfolio. Finally, we evaluate our method with a case study and report on the feasibility of the method.
