Das Hepatitis-D-Virus (HDV) besteht aus einem negativen RNA-Ring, der die Eigenschaft hat, die Hüllproteine (HBsAg) des Hepatitis-B-Virus zu binden. Es können sich daher nur Patienten mit einer HBV-Infektion mit HDV infizieren.
