Abstract

As Pechukas discovered [1], the fate of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a Hamiltonian H = H 0V upon variation of λ can be described by a set of ordinary firstorder differential equations. That set was interpreted by Yukawa [2, 3] as Hamilton’s equations for fictitious classical particles moving in one dimension as the “time” λ elapses.
