Multiple-Stage Single-Product Factory Models

Abstract

The mechanics for developing both exact and approximate single workstation models were developed in Chap. 3. Linking several workstations together is a necessary step towards more realistic factory models. In this chapter, the single workstation models are linked together to form more realistic factory models. The approach taken is to use general G/G/1 and G/G/c system approximations of Properties 3.3 and 3.5 as the building blocks for multiple workstation systems. To properly connect a series of workstations, the departure process of jobs from each workstation must be characterized.
