Abstract

In the recent years, the trend of adopting semantic technology to represent knowledge on herbal medicine has increased tremendously. A formal representation of herbal medicine knowledge is crucial for the conservation and utilization of biological resources. Due to the abundance of herbal medicine knowledge, the approaches to integrate diverse sources of knowledge to fulfill needs of various domain experts in multiple fields is a major challenge. The Herbal Medicine Knowledge Repository is modeled to overcome this challenge. The repository consists of the knowledge that interrelates knowledge of herbs (plants), knowledge on traditional medicine, the process involved to produce the medicine and the associated pharmacology that can be shared and utilized by various interest groups. In addition to presenting the model of the ontology, this paper will also outline the experience in modeling and engineering the Herbal Medicine Knowledge Repository.
