Abstract
As the names suggest, American bison Bison bison (popularly “buffalo”) and European bison Bison bonasus live on two separate continents. They nevertheless both arise from a common ancestor living in south-east Asia (where there are no bison at all at present). The ancestors of the American bison reached the Americas via a land bridge between the continents spanning what is today the Bering Sea. Final and full separation of the two species was assured when the ice sheets retreated once more some 10,000 years ago (Shapiro et al. 2004).
