Jedenfalls haben sowohl die substantivische wie auch die abbildende (μίμησις) Vorstellung von der Natur der Zahl eine begriffliche Schwierigkeit. Bei der ersten Deutung wird nicht recht klar, wie abstrakte Gegenstände, denen jede materielle Qualität abgeht, eine Dingwelt herstellen sollen.
