The Involvement of Calcium Channel α2δ Subunits in Diseases and as a Therapeutic Target

Pathologies of Calcium Channels

Abstract

The α2δ subunits are auxiliary subunits of voltage-gated calcium channels that may also have roles independent of calcium channels. Four mammalian α2δ subunits have been identified, and all of them have been identified to play a role in a variety of pathologies. Furthermore, two α2δ subunits (α2δ-1 and α2δ-2) are pharmacological targets for the gabapentinoid drugs, which are used therapeutically in the treatment of epilepsies and neuropathic pain.
