Abstract

Frozen soil and snow are the two important factors in the land cryosphere. Their accurate simulations are significant for reducing the uncertainties in models and for improving the ability of model prediction. In this chapter, our recent progress on the evaluation and modification of the Community Land Model 3.0 (CLM3.0) in the simulation of soil hydrothermal process and snow cover are reviewed. Several issues in the parameterizations of freezing–melting and hydraulic properties of soil are summarized, and suggestions for improvement in our model performance on frozen soil and snow are offered.
