Abstract

The Sonderforschungsbereich 3 is one of the places in the FRG where microeconometric models and methods have been developed and applied for a comparatively long time. In the meantime, micro analyses have become more frequently used in the FRG. At least to some extent this is a response to improved data, better methods and cheaper computing facilities. But microanalytic models also have some advantages as compared to the traditional macroeconometric approach. Especially, microeconometric models are less affected by structural changes in the economy. In addition, more precise estimates can be obtained on the micro level due to the large number of observations in micro data sets. However, also some new problems arise like unobserved heterogeneity of observations and sample selectivity that have no direct counterpart on the macro level. But experiences at the Sonderforschungsbereich 3 demonstrate the large opportunities for detailed analyses that can be conducted using micro data.
