Abstract

The irradiation of benign diseases demands exact planning and precise treatment delivery. When using radiotherapy for age-related macular degeneration (ARMD), the size and location of the globe, the smallness of the macular area to be treated, and the proximity of the lens as well as the opposite globe and other structures must all be taken into consideration (Charles and Brown 1975). Conventional x-ray simulation cannot provide an exact presentation of the soft tissue structures of the eye (Dinges et al. 1998; Karlsson et al. 1995; Vinh Hung et al. 1998). Virtual simulation captures more information in a format allowing multiplanar reconstruction and creation of digital radiographs all in one session. The patient is then free to leave and the radiation oncologist can design the treatment program when convenient (Niehoff et al 1998).
