Abstract

It is generally accepted that computed tomography (CT) is the best single imaging modality for the initial evaluation of patients with acute pancreatitis. It can accurately detect the disease, depict complications, assess or stage severity, and guide interventional techniques (Balthazar et al. 1994). The exact role of CT in chronic pancreatitis is less well defined, and competing modalities of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and transabdominal and endoscopic sonography also are considered to be important modalities both for diagnosis of the disease and for detection of complications, morphologic staging, and precise definition of ductal anatomy.
