Zusammenfassung
Botulinumtoxin wird von anaeroben Bakterien der Gattung Clostridium botulinum produziert. Es gibt verschiedene Serotypen A-G. Zur klinischen Anwendung wurde bisher nur der Serotyp A eingesetzt. Botulinumtoxin (BTX) ist vor allem im Zusammenhang mit der Lebensmittelvergiftung Botulismus bekannt. Es besitzt von allen bisher bekannten Giften die höchste toxische Potenz. Schon vor fast 200 Jahren hat sich J. Kerner mit dieser Vergiftung besch00E4;ftigt, die er als Fettvergiftung beschrieben hat. Es war ein weiter Weg von den Forschungsarbeiten Kerners über die Entdeckung des 900 kD-Komplexes bis zum ersten klinischen Einsatz von Botulinumtoxin A durch Mr. A. Scott in den Vereinigten Staaten 1980. A. Scott setzte Botulinumtoxin A erstmals bei Strabismus beim Menschen ein, nachdem er tierexperimentelle Vorstudien betrieben hatte.
