Abstract

The electrokinetic soil decontamination process has been applied, at laboratory scale, to a clay model (kaolinite) and organic rich solids (sewage sludges) to study transport of anionic (nitrate) or cationic (heavy metals) contaminants.

Heavy metal decontamination rats in kaolinite are essentially controlled by liquid-solid interactions. These processes are also predominant in sludges. However, it is possible to extract metals by this process in conditions where they are only slightly solubilized. In well defined experimental conditions, the removal of cadmium, zinc and nickel form sewage sludges was quantitative. It remained satisfying for copper (87%), whereas chromium and lead were only partially mobilized (44 and 40% respectively).
