Abstract

Felbamate is a relatively new antiepileptic drug which has pharmacological activity in animal models of both partial and generalized seizures, as well as clinical efficacy in patients with localization-related and generalized epilepsies. It is structurally dissimilar to any other antiepileptic drug in current clinical use, and has a different spectrum of dose-related side effects. Initial excitement about the drug was tempered by the appearance of idiosyncratic haematological and hepatic toxicity, and the number of patients taking the drug fell dramatically. Felbamate remains, however, a useful agent for patients with uncontrolled seizure disorders. In addition, it may have some neuroprotective activity in animal models of cerebral ischaemia, and an effect on neuropathic pain.
