Zusammenfassung
Die Frage nach den Grundlagen unserer Umwelt, ihrer Vergangenheit und vor allem ihrer Zukunft, hat die Menschheit seit jeher beschäftigt. Sie war nicht zuletzt die Triebkraft der rasanten und systematischen Entwicklung der Naturwissenschaften in den letzten 400 Jahren. Lange sind wir von der Annahme ausgegangen, dass ein Beobachter oder Experimentator unabhängig vom zu beschreibenden System operieren kann. Erst die moderne Physik unseres Jahrhunderts hat uns deutlich gemacht, dass diese Annahme nur eine Näherung darstellt, die umso besser ist, je grösser die Längenskalen bzw. Zeitskalen des zu untersuchenden Objektes sind. Diese uns geläufige und für viele Aufgaben genügende Optik ist im Anblick des Problems der Klimaänderung zu eng, zu einschränkend und oft irreführend. Mit der Industrialisierung ist der Mensch aktiver Teil dieses Systems geworden und hat so die Unabhängigkeit zur Kontrolle dieses “globalen Experimentes“, das wir im Begriff sind durchzuführen, verloren.
