Purine Arabinosides, Xylosides, and Lyxosides

Abstract

Arabinosyluracil and arabinosylthymine were identified in extracts of the sponge, Crytotethya crypta (Bergmans and Burke, 1955), but arabinosylpurines were first obtained by chemical synthesis (Lee et al., 1960; Reist et al., 1962). Eventually one of these, arabinosyladenine, was found as an antibiotic in cultures of Streptomyces antibioticus (Parke-Davis and Company, 1967). A considerable number of arabinosylpurines have now been obtained, some with interesting biological properties. Their chemistry and a range of biological tests have received detailed discussion (Cohen, 1966; Suhadolnik, 1970). This discussion will be limited to those having most relevance to tumor and virus studies, and particularly to those on which an appreciable volume of data has accumulated. The structures of relevant arabinosylpurines are shown in Fig. 1.
