Abstract

The term “placental insufficiency” refers to a clinical syndrome and is often thought of as being comparable to renal or pulmonary insufficiency. It has, however, become increasingly apparent that “placental insufficiency” is largely secondary to alterations in blood flow through the placenta and attention has been principally focussed on alterations in the maternal circulation.
