Abstract

Behaviour modification has a short but factious history and, as with any innovation that challenges established ideas, it has encountered its quota of scepticism. Three important questions have emerged. Firstly, from a theoretical viewpoint: “Can behaviour modification work?” This question arose on the part of those who regarded problematic behaviour as the public manifestation of internal conflicts and pathologies, and who thought that “symptom substitution” would inevitably occur if only the “symptom” was removed. This and related problems have been adequately answered elsewhere (e.g. BANDURA, 1969), and it is safe to conclude: “Yes, behaviour modification can work.”
