Abstract

In most plant families a considerable number of steroids have been found. Besides in the sterols, we find this type of structure in corresponding sapogenins, cardiac glycosides and alkaloids. Especially the latter groups are investigated intensively, because they exhibit strong pharmacologic and toxicologic actions. More and more sources of steroidal compounds are under investigation, as is seen in the different phytochemical reports. Until recently all prokaryotic organisms were thought to lack the capacity for sterol production, but these compounds have now been identified in certain blue-green algae and bacteria.
