Abstract

During the past 20 years, whilst electron microscopy and histochemistry have made great advances in many fields, their application to the mammalian mesonephros has been very limited. The few publications that have been made on this subject have been almost entirely concerned with the human and the rabbit, although the mesonephros in these species is very poorly developed when compared with that of the cat and sheep. This apparent lack of interest in the mammalian mesonephros may be due to the fact that, in most of the more common laboratory animals, it is poorly developed and may even be non–functional (Brambell, 1928); whereas in carnivores and artiodactyls, with a well developed mesonephros which is active for a long time, the embryos are difficult to obtain.
