Abstract

Some time ago, I developped(with R.S. Schechter)a theory concerning the influence of the Soret effect on the thermohydrodynamic stability of a horizontal binary fluid layer heated from below or otherwise /1,2,see also 3,4/ The theory has had nice experimental verification /5,6/. The present report aims at further elaborating in the understanding of the same problem, a Soret-driven convective instability. Results are reported here relative to the nonlinear regime together with a discussion of some secondary phenomena like the influence of rotation, surface tension tractions, compressibility, Dufour effect, etc. For the basic problem, references, and relevant equations we address the reader to the earlier papers/1,2/.
