The Automatic Implantable Defibrillator: A New Avenue

Abstract

The recognition by Beck et al. (1) and by Zoll et al. (2) of the unique property of electric countershock to terminate ventricular fibrillation in man began a new era in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. Within a relatively short period of time, this discovery prompted the emergence of modern coronary care and resulted in an almost complete elimination of primary ventricular fibrillation as a significant cause in hospital mortality from cardiovascular disorders.
