Part of the book series: Telecommunications ((TELECOMMUNICATI,volume 3))

Abstract

In recent years there has been a rapid growth in products aimed at making the television set more than just a passive receiver of TV programmes. These developments include games, VCR, videodiscs and other attachments as well as fundamentally new ways of using TV equipment such as participative television and videotex. In the widely publicised Qube experiment in Ohio, participation allows a greater choice of entertainment and greater involvement in quizzes and chat programmes. Many of the TV experiments are similarly orientated towards entertainment. However, the videotex developments aim to provide information services for both business and residential users and therefore represent a more radical departure from TV’s usual role.
