Anaesthetic Management of Hypophysectomy

  • Chapter
Endocrinology in Anaesthesia and Surgery

Abstract

Hypophysectomy is indicated for removal of tumors of the pituitary, acromegaly, and Cushings disease of pituitary origin. In addition, hypophysectomy or some form of pituitary ablation is indicated for palliation of patients with mammary or prostatic cancer, hemorrhagic diabetc retinopathy, and severely disabling chronic pain. Hypophysectomy can be performed through a frontoparietal craniotomy or transnasally. Pituitary ablation can be accomplished with external irradiation, implantation of Ytrium 90 pellets transnasally, cryohypophysectomy, or chemohypophysectomy.
