Abstract

Neurotropin is a preparation containing active principles extracted from inflamed skin tissue of rabbits inoculated with vaccinia virus. So far it has been used as an anti-allergy preparation, but in recent years an outstanding sedative and analgesic effect has been observed in animal experiments, and especially a rise in analgesic-threshold and prolonging of the analgesic action when it was used with pentazocine. These actions of Neurotropin are unique in that they are minimal in normal healthy animals but marked in animals in a diseased or stressed state. These effects seen in basic studies are in good agreement with the clinical effects and features of Neurotropin observed so far, in that Neurotropin exerts little effect on healthy subjects but a marked effect on patients, because it restores the extremely excited nerves to normal, thus reversing the disease process.
