Das Wort Melancholie, Schwarzgalligkeit, ist eine Prägung der Griechen. Es findet sich erstmals im Corpus Hippocraticum, das sich seiner wiederholt bedient. Versuche, seine Spur noch weiter nach rückwärts hin zu verfolgen, führten ins Unbezeugte (W. MÜRI, 1953).
