Abstract

Anaesthesia with potent inhalation agents is often accepted as a first choice in paediatric surgery. Since methoxyflurane has disappeared from practice in our clinic, and isoflurane is not commercially available, it seems reasonable to review the effects and some clinical applications of halothane and enflurane in paediatrics. Before discussing the merits and the relative indications and contra-indications of these agents, it is essential to remember that children, and particularly infants, differ sharply from adults. Although the most apparent difference is the size, one should be fully aware that infants, children, and adults also differ in their response to anaesthesia and to drugs.
